Mental illness is not only a major issue in America, but it is an ongoing problem in the black community. The lack of accessibility to health, educational, social, and economic resources can contribute to a person’s mental health. People who are homeless, incarcerated, impoverished or struggling with substance abuse are also subject to poor mental health with a higher risk for the illness.
Come and join us at the Antioch Baptist Church North as they present the Antioch Health and Wellness Day: Breaking Barriers on Saturday, September 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event is designed for people dealing with mental health and to break the stigma surronding mental illness.
Part one of the event will include break-out sessions, a mental health forum, lunch, and a panel of mental health experts and speakers. The panelists will break down the stigma surrounding mental illness to younger and older audiences (Ages 10-18). Special guests include Twilynn Jourdain, Dr. Margaret Weaver, Richard Hamilton, Alvita Hamilton, Dr. Beverly Dorsey, Dr. Raushannah Johnson-Verwayne, and Brittani Fleming. Dr. Pamela Thompson will be the breakout and keynote speaker.
The Community Health Fair will take place in the Fountain Area on Northside Drive from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come and get screened for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and more. Eldercare services and AARP-caregiver resources will be available to senior citizens attending the event. Don’t miss out on other eventful activities during the second half of the event, including chair massages, foot screening by Podiatry, and a healthy cooking demo for food lovers working towards living a healthy lifestyle.
