The legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lives on for many years to come. Please join us as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center) this Tuesday, June 26th from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The King Center is a 501(c) (3) organization established in 1968 by Mrs. Coretta Scott King. The center’s purpose is to indoctrinate Dr. King’s nonviolent philosophy and methodology into the next generation of leaders bringing forth positive change to the world.
The celebration will include music, great food, giveaways, free birthday cake, and cupcakes to attendees on a first come, first serve basis. There will be live entertainment for the entire family inside the Yolanda D. King Theatre for the Performing Arts from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The special guests performing inside the theatre will include spoken word artists Hank Stewart, Wanesha Spencer, and Cellist Jen Cornell. Attendees can also check out a special multicultural youth dramatization of the King Center’s historical contributions.
Additional events at the King’s Center will carry on throughout the year, including a Beloved Community Expo on Saturday, August 25th. The expo will showcase international culture, music, food, language, education, arts, religion, and humanity. The August event will be followed by a 2-day workshop called Nonviolence 365. This intense workshop will kick off on Friday, September 7th and is set up for participants to engage in discussions on Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violence, interactive sessions on his six principles of non-violence, and the six steps of non-violence. Visitors can also be a part of the discussion on Dr. King readings and teachings, including “Pilgrimage to Nonviolence”, “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, and “Drum Major Instinct.”
